With any new console, there will be rumors that spread like wildfire. The latest rumor about Microsoft’s Xbox 720 is that it will not be able to play pre-owned games. I can tell you right now, this rumor is completely false.
GameStop CEO Paul Raines agrees saying that “We think it’s unlikely that there would be that next-gen console because the model simply hasn’t been proven to work”. He also said that “Remember, used video games have a residual value. Remember GameStop generates $1.2 billion of trade credits around the world with our used game model. So, consider taking used games out of that, you’d have to find new ways to sell the games. And, our partners are good partners. The console companies have great relationships with us”.
Even without Paul Raines disagreeing with the rumor, how much sense does it make? Microsoft would be alienating a large portion of their userbase (in a poll done by Escapist Magazine, 60% of voters said that they buy pre-owned games) and giving up an edge to what ever next generation console Sony puts out.
