When Sony’s Playstation Portable originally came out, it was basically the buzz on the internet. It was the most powerful portable gaming device out there, and everyone was expecting a lot from it. Then when Sony decided to release their PSPGo, things started going downhill. You basically had the same device competing against itself. Then Sony decided to get the idea to begin tweaking around with hardware and software capabilities, and everything just hit the wall. Hard. The PSP all but disappeared from the market.

Now it’s successor, the Playstation Vita is having a go at it.

The Vita was released on December 17th, 2011 in Japan, where it was met with mostly negative reviews. Having software bugs and other issues, it had good first week sales but immediately tanked after, with it now selling less than the past generation PSP. People were ready to call it a flop before it hit the market anywhere else.

Two months later and with fixed and eliminated issues, it was released globally. And it was definitely seen with improvements. In just one week of global sales, the Vita has sold  800,000 units. It’s Asian release only saw 400,000 units sold in the past two months. Whether or not this has to do with hype issues, fans hoping it can bring back the success of the portable Playstation devices, or if it has really seen that much of an upgrade in the past two months has yet to be determined.

Seeing the sales figures, Sony’s CEO Andrew House was reported saying

“PS Vita was designed to deliver the ultimate portable entertainment experience, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the reaction we’re seeing from consumers and the pace at which PS Vita is selling. The market has responded and there is clear demand for a mobile device capable of providing a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context.”

With the Vita’s only real competition being Nintendo’s 3DS, which was released in March of last year, the Vita is projected to do well. But until long term sales figures are released and how bad it’s Asian release did, analysts aren’t holding their breath just yet, and some are even expecting a price cut to show up pretty soon.

With how well the Vita’s been accepted so far, it looks like it’s future may be a bright one. At the same time, it may just currently be living on hype, and a few people have been heard saying “It’s a Sony device, of course it will sell well.”

So what’s your take on it? Do you think the Vita will be Sony’s new goldmine, or that it will fall flat of the face of the earth in due time? Do you already own one?
