They called on G-8 to boost investment in telecommunications networks and to avoid regulation of the internet to prevent growth hampering. Schmidt said that “The Internet is the greatest force for good in the world, and we should not have premature regulation ahead of innovation”.

The attendees of the high profile conference ranged from Mark Zuckerberg to Hiroshi Mikitani. One attendee, Maurice Levy, who is the CEO of PUB, said “Yes, there has to be regulation, but up to a point”. “It’ll take long discussions based on good collaboration and technological tools to find this point.”

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has tasked Levy with creating a panel of internet executives to meet with G-8 leaders as they explore the internet. Sarkozy said that the internet needs government involvement to reach its full potential of linking people and boosting economic growth.
